About
Sweat Smarter, Run Farther
Hi my name is Phil and I am an avid runner, passionate about all things related to running, especially exploring new places and environments to run.
This passion has taken me to many fantastic locations, allowing me to experience the uniqueness each destination has to offer.
I have always enjoyed running throughout my life even in school I enjoyed cross country running and the athletics track the most.
When I left school I did not engage with sports straight away I used my new found freedom in exploring the music and travelling, physical exercise was not a thing for me.
I quickly realised though that if I wanted my best life looking after me and my body was an essential ingredient.
I think a main contributor for me not pursuing the sports straight off the bat after school was because I suffered from a high sweat rate. This made exercise a somewhat embarrassing thing during school hence I think why I pursued singular sports like athletics and running.
I knew also that there was no magic cure for my sweating as my mum also suffered with the same issues so I figured it was something I had to live with.
I rekindled my love of running in my early twenties and have never looked back and I’m now in my early fifties.
If you have come to my website and are reading this then you may well know or know someone what it is like to have a high sweat rate.
It impacts every aspect of your life not just your running, for example what clothes to wear so they don’t show any damp patches if you start to sweat due to heat or stress.
As I said running has given me so much enjoyment in life and has allowed me to see places I may not have seen if I was sedentary in life.
I have always strived to better my running and have taken part in many races in pursuit of the inevitable PB but also the enjoyment of spending time with likeminded people.
In the last 15 years I have pursued Ultra running which to me is the ultimate test as a runner to see how far you can push yourself both physically and mentally. My first ultra marathon experience was in 2010 and a 100mile hilly ultra race. I did write a blog about this at the time if you are interested can be found here (link).
I learnt some lessons whilst training for this around hydration and how perhaps water alone was not going to work for me as a sweaty runner. I put a lot of research in to electrolyte replacement and sodium deficiency. Did I get it right for the race defiantly not, did it help me yes for sure.
The big take for me was I felt utterly alone and that my sweating issues were mine alone to combat, no one else suffered I was unique.
I harboured these thoughts for years and to be fair still sometimes feel that I am alone in this suffering. However I know I am not alone I know there are many people who suffer with this very issue and I want to break the stigma of not talking about your high sweat rate for fear of embarrassment or worse still people thinking you are very unfit as you sweat a lot.
That is why I have set this website up, to give some tips and advice on what I have found works. Above all though I want to create an online community where we can all share our stories without fear of being judged for what is essentially a condition that we have no control over.
